General Tips

Tanking Tips:

1. If tank death is the cause of a wipe look at the logs.  Find out which ability killed you, find out if the incoming damage is healable without cooldowns (anything over 20k dps requires a cd to survive).  If you died due to a special ability + white hit, that is the special ability for which you need to save your cooldowns.

2. Every tanking class has 2 defensive cooldowns, one strong, one weak, you should always macro your weaker cooldown in conjunction with other weaker defensive cooldowns or trinkets.  For example, Warriors have last stand and shield wall.  Shield Wall is the stronger cooldown, while Last Stand is the weaker cooldown.  If you macro Last Stand together with your trinkets + Shield Block you'll find that Last Stand can be just as effective as Shield Wall at mitigating incoming spike damage.

3. Positioning is Everything.  The main difference between a good tank and a great tank is the way they can improve the survivability of the raid just by choosing the right spots to tank.  Melee tend to trail the boss they are dpsing, if you want them to move away from a dangerous area where they may take spike AoE damage, moving the mob yourself so that they trail you is more effective than telling them to move.  If ranged DPS need to collapse at a certain moment in the fight, go to them, etc.

Healing Tips:

1. Raid frames are everything.  A well set up raid frame will only display exactly what you need to know, no more, no less.  Too much information and you will find yourself paralyzed by shifting through useless information during the encounter.  Too little information, and you will miss the DBM text and fail your assignment.  Remember, it is easier to recognize an ability by icon than reading a piece of DBM text no matter how large it appears on your screen.

2. Have a macro planned out for when you are forced to heal while moving.  Encounters that require a lot of movement and repositioning are hard because it forces you to break your rotations.  Always have a backup plan for spot healing when you are forced to move.  For Paladins this may mean using a macro that pops Divine Favor in conjunction with Holy Shock for the guaranteed crit, which will allow you to follow through with an instant cast flash heal.  Remember, always watch those DBM timers so that you save your spikiest instant heals for times when you need to reposition.

3. There is always a rhythm to the incoming damage.  Take for instance Professor Putricide during Phase 2.  Malleable Goo and Green Ooze are the two biggest causes of spike damage on raid.  Don't mindlessly spam your instant group heal cds.  Get in tune with the rhythm of damage and be ready to react with your cool down asap.

4. Learn to jump turn, strafe, run figure eights, etc. using only your keyboard such that you are just as effective keyboard moving as you would be moving with both keyboard and mouse.  There are times when you will have to heal and maneuver in some complicated manner.  Sindragosa is a good example.  You will be busy healing during phase 3, and yet at the same time expected to reposition constantly behind ice blocks or run out during Blistering Cold.  Your mouse pointer may be busy scurrying through your raid frames, and you will have to move just using your keyboard. If so, learn to jump turn strafe just using your keyboard.  Learn to toggle auto run, turn with your keyboard, mash your abilities and navigate grid all at the same time.

5. Unless positioning mandates otherwise, always keep mindful of your positioning so that you are covering as much of the raid as possible.  Remember, you are a healer - DPS need to adjust to your positioning.  If someone needs to get out of your way, speak up, communicate.  If someone needs to readjust their positioning to be in range of you, speak up, communicate.
